Putting aside all the anti diesel rubbish being spouted, have you actually asked your wife? You know, The person who is going to be driving the car? Do they not have a say in this? For what it’s worth there is one consideration against the Beemer and that is potential DPF replacement costs which for a 1 series Diesel can be £3k. However Personally i think the Volvo is a bit of a handful to drive for the intended use but accept SWMBO may be happy to drive it. If not, in the short term i would suggest to your other half that you keep the Beemer, perhaps fit smaller wheels with non runflat tyres to soften the ride and find a good independant Beemer specialist.

I've got several health problems that have been attributed to diesel engines, if i had my way they would be illegal and any road cars fueled by diesel would be taken off the road and either retrofitted with petrol/LPG engines or crushed.
I also know of many PSV/HGV drivers that died of lung cancer as a result of diesel fumes - they were all non-smokers as well. Feel free to argue the point with the specialists i've seen that have confirmed the most likely cause of my problems is diesel engines.

From a safety angle for your baby and wife you should keep the BMW and new Volvo. When you see what a tiny little Renault Modus can do to a Volvo 940 it's a no brainer.

Thanks for all your pointers.
New things to think about: emissions & safety. The 940 has no airbags, or abs. It has a cat converter, and the tail pipe is always clean so particle emissions I guess are low. It doesnt use oil. It does leak it though (front and rear seals need doing i think. d'oh). I have no idea how it would compare to the 1 series on CO and CO2. The 118 bmw has enough safety stuff. It is euro5 diesel. The tailpipe is always clean as the dpf properly functions. Someone also made a point about memories... which is important to me as (when allowed) do lots of roadtrips. And a semi-sketchy vehicle is always fun. As I still can't decide (mrs suggested to wait a bit), I have cleared the garage and put it inside so it stops killing the front grass. |
