Default Engine replacement by Volvo uk

I have a S60 T8 with 60 plus thousand miles of which at least half of which have been done under battery power, approx 30 on battery the rest on petrol power
It’s under extended warranty ( luckily) as just over 3 years from registration.

It has been Fully dealer serviced since purchased but recently went into limp mode whilst near home, After investigation this resulted in a major issue being caused by part of a spark plug dropping into a cylinder ( plugs replaced by dealer on last service.
After much deliberation Volvo informed me through my dealer they are going to replace the engine block / ancillary’s being stopped.
My query is this
Has anyone else experienced anything like this and any advice on process would be most illuminating as I have a number of questions I will be asking but also wanted to ask here.

I would assume it will get a minimum of a short engine. This is the block with the crank and pistons already fitted. The engine is removed from the car and striped down and then your new block built back up. This has been done on the diesels for various issues before.

Normally when the end of a plug drops off it does significant damage to the cylinder head also as it is mashed against the top of the piston and the valves. Excessive cylinder temperature is normally a contributor to a failure like this. The plugs also need to have been torqued into the head correctly. So I would assume you would be getting a cylinder head as well?

Certainly the questions I would be asking is what was the cause and what exactly is getting replaced and how much warranty will the new engine have?

I'd expect that it would be a full engine with cylinder head. The extra labour to remove, clean check and refit the cylinder head from the original engine will be way more than the cost difference of a short and full engine. Also, as the engine has foreign object damage there is no way of knowing if the old head and valves are damaged until it is removed - even with a borescope.
