Exclamation Converting to Diesel Auto

I've got a mad idea about converting my 2.8 V6 760 estate to a Turbo Diesel one. Does anyone know if the bell housings are the same ?

Can anyone advise if this is a good swap or a waste of time ? I know mostly everything will need changing

Tank
Pipes
filler
engine
ecu
loom
mounts
toe bearing
Gauges
ignition
exhausts

etc etc etc

This isn't something I haven't had loads of thoughts of and done research, however, just cannot find the answers to the two major questions

1: Will the engine fit to the auto box
2: Will the engine be powerfull enough to pull the estate and it's auto box

cant really see why you would want to do this unless you do SERIOUS mileage every year. The costs of converting the car will FAR outweigh any possible saving you will make on the cost of fuel.

Alternativly, it would be cheaper to buy a diesel estate to start with

Default Convertring to Diesel

I do some extreme miles a year in excess of 40,000. Can't find a diesel automatic, no doubt someone will tell me that they are available.

The second choice is converting to LPG. I can do the technical side like the fitting and fixings so won't need to pay a garage, well will have to pay for welding of the mounts if they are different.

so they are available, although that one has had it by the looks of the description.

Id say the LPG conversion might be worth a go, only problem with that, its not freely available (at least round here its not)

PM Mike_Brace. i think he does LPG conversions

Mike will be able to sort you out with an LPG conversion (kit).
The derv engine is not so good on juice tbh and with lpg at less than half its the cheapest thing bar Ribena!

One of the 760 options was a Turbo Diesel with Intercooler and auto box. I don't think the 740 diesels had the Intercooler.
So the 'chassis' should have all the holes etc. to take the engine. Is probably a different engine cross member and mounts. As engine is a straight six the gearbox will sit further back, and need shorter prop shaft.

Default diesel mpg

i have 940 diesel estate, driven normally 35mpg, driven carefully 40mpg. i would echo other views, why bother messing with conversion, buy a 9 series diesel. d24 tic is a fine engine, rattly on outside, quiet within. tons of power, if timed properly. i paid £1000 for mine,1995 se.
