Hello wondering if my dad does the auto box solenoid valve mod to his 940 what if any are the legal issues? E.g. would he need to notify his insurance of the mod?

Highly doubt any insurer would randomly want the repairer to pull the auto box apart if there was a crash.

Thanks Dai. I don't see how that's going to alter the performance significantly (if at all) so why the insurers would need to know or it have any legal side effects i can't see.

I meant overdrive mod, this is a quote from an old thread on the subject:

The 4th gear is locked out using a solenoid which can get gummed up, a fluid flush will help a lot.

I had similar symptoms and ran 8 litres of fluid through it and it now holds 4th from 60mph upwards. I need to do more though as I have to lift the throttle to get it to shift at all.

I've also bought a solenoid replacement blank but have yet to fit it. That just removes the lockout function so it operates as a 'normal' 4 speed box.

Like most almost everything the change probably has the potential to contravene/invalidate type approval or equivalent regulations. Or some other terribly worthy and important law.

Is there any aspect of the change that is potentially harmful/dangerous/&c. ? If so you don't want to do it of course. Otherwise there are two useful legal principles to help you.
1. When lawyers were allowed to use latin maxims they said: approx ... de minimis non causat lex. That is, the law does not take account of trifles. I guess that still applies, it just has to be said in English now.

2. And f it were prosecution matter, well we all know that to prosecute there needs to be evidence likely for a conviction, AND, be in the public interest.

Where is the public interest in stopping you from doing your bit towards saving the environment?

May the force be with you.

This is general knowledge. There is a former solicitor in this house but they did little road traffic law (and did it well) and they are out of date &c. and they will not give advice to me let alone to you.

If you want actual advice, go and consult for example so called Mr Loophole. A silly nick name. He actually carefully examines all the regulations &c. to be sure the law has been complied with by the authorities. So the authorities do not wrongly get a conviction. And it must take a huge amount of time init.

Can overflowing with worms emoticon....
