Default Rear arches

Anyone know how much to do rusty rear arches well? I’m looking at an estate, haven’t seen it yet, but one rear arch is bubbling apparently. Thanks

Also is this going to be coming from inside? Can it be cured with a lasting repair?

Dan assuming that your car has the large bungs accessible from the interior, then pull the plastic sill cover trims off and turn the carpet back you can then remove the bungs to view the full length of each sill.

Ok great didn’t realise you could see in like that. It’s a car I’m thinking of buying, if I decide to go look at least I will know. It’s 300 miles away. Thanks

I did not know that either. Perhaps before traveling you might ask the seller to check that can be done on the car they are selling. And if so they might tell you what can be seen, or provide photographs.

Good luck with your intended purchase.

Yes that’s definitely a good call. I’m looking at another 240 first, so see where that goes.

To address your question. From my little knowledge and attitude. Re cars. Rust/corrosion comes from inside unless in a particular instance someone can prove otherwise.

Caveat Emptor.

If it comes from inside, then a lasting repair is more expensive.

In general re 240s. Later models have much better protection against rust. Partial galvanisation. I don't know the dates involved. Sorry. That is well worth looking in to.

As you are looking at estates, be sure to look under the rear bumper. That is a notorious rust prone area. Generally not an MOT or structural area. But not cheap to repair effectively. There is a repair panel available from Volvo.

I have an estate for practicality. For choice, I would really like to have a saloon. My first Volvo was a 244, a saloon.

I would probably also prefer a K-Jet mechanical injection in preference to the later LH 2.4 Lambda sensor electronic engine. From what I read in this forum, the K-Jet gives less bovver.

There are other opinions.

Unless the car is a real bargain it doesn’t look like a cheap repair.

That’s what I was thinking! Don’t mind the rear arches, but rust from inside the cills and in the welded seam don’t look good. Perhaps one to avoid. Thanks

Still interested if anyone knows how much rear arches cost to weld in repair panels and paint etc. For future reference.

You should check, many times it’s from the inside but not bad. Depends on what you need the car for, it may last 10 years more before needing major repair...
