Default Question: 2015 XC70 Auto AWD D4 or D5?

Hi all,
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere already but trying to get a definitive answer.
I'm trying to understand the difference in engines in a 2015 XC70.
The default D5 Auto has the D5244T15 engine with 215hp/325lb ft.
I've come across the D4 AWD Auto with the D5244T12 engine that produces 181hp/310lb ft.
I'm aware the Polestar Optimisation can tune this D4 engine up to 215bhp/325lb ft, ie. to the same level (on paper) as the stock D5.
Can the collective advise if this D4 engine is the same 2.4 twin turbo engine as the D5 but essentially just detuned or are there other differences?
Many thanks in advance.

My understanding is that, as you suggest the difference between the D5 and D4 is purely a software detune. I have read this several times on this site. What I never found an answer to was why there was a difference between the torque figures in the D5 manual and auto engines, yet when "polestared" the torque figures are the same. This was further confused by Volvo not "under torqueing" any other manual engine v auto engine in its range.

Cheers
Bob

I thought the D4 with 181hp was the new 4 cylinder 2.0 L Volvo engine?

According to Wikipedia trhe difference is that the D5 215 bhp has twin turbos while the D4 181 bhp only has one turbo, but then Wikipedia insists that while the D5244T15 was fitted to the XC70, the D5244T12 was not. It was fitted to the V60 and XC60. The D4 engine in the XC70 is the D5244T17 which actually seems to have a very similar spec to the D5244T12. However Volvo have so many different engine specs that Wikipedia may have it wrong!

Depends.
The later 181 hp D4 AWD xc70/xc60 have the 2.4L 5-cyl engine while the 181hp D4 FWD xc70/xc60 have the VEA 2.0L 4-cyl engine.

On the single turbo d5 the difference is software and it’s easy to tweak the d4 to d5 levels.

The double blow d5 is a very different driving experience, which won’t be matched by a updated d4.

If you want d5 power - just buy a d5.

Default Owner’s Handbook

Hi,

If you download the owner’s handbook app from the Volvo web site, listed in the engine specifications section you will find exact engine codes/output/torque
Number of cylinders etc for each ad every engine version for that year.
The last D4 version was the 181 bhp 4 cyl 1969cc that I have, which is great in 2WD 8 speed auto form, can’t speak for 4WD. It is also Euro 6 and so lower road tax, with slightly better economy also.
This engine is now the basis for all Volvo’s current 2 litre engines.

The AWD models retained the 5 cylinder engines and 6-speed TF-80.

The designation D4 D5 etc is NOT an engine type designation after 2010 .. It refers to a power range

D2 = 120 bhp
D3 = 150 bhp
D4 = 190 bhp
D5 = 200+ bhp

give or take 10 bhp ...
