Default Adding a power cable?

Hi
I wanted to run a power cable for our phones, I intend to install a 12v lighter socket behind the dash & wondered if it would be easier to tap in to the existing lighter socket wires, or to run new cables from the fuse box?
Any guides on running new cables & connecting to the fuse box would be great
TIA

Post Power Split from front 12v socket

Hi Ally,

This is just what I did in my Jan 06 xc90, to support a Garmin SatNav install.

What i did was to disconnect front console 12v cable from the socket and then connect a "Y" cable that I had made; thus having a 'floating' 12v socket behind the console unit that the SatNav plugged into.

All the connectors are readily available (and socket) form most good independent auto parts / auto electrics stores; alternatively try Maplin .

Sorry but I did not take any photos when installing, but if I get time this weekend I'll see what I can do.

I've taken feeds off the back of both 12v sockets, I've got a lead run behind the dash for iphone/tom-tom which runs up the back of the dash and out by the windscreen on the drivers side. fairly easy took me about half an hour with dismantling and re-fitting radio console etc...

Thanks folks, I've already got the socket etc all ready to go, so sounds like it's easiest to just splice in to the existing lighter socket, good stuff

You'll need a torx bit - a T25 I believe to undo the various screws, nuts and bolts.

Cheers, already had the stereo out recently to re route the Parrot cable which was in the glove box, I moved it to come out through the cubby space in the stereo, so I could connect it to the Brodit mount, but various wee problems whilst connected to the Parrot have led me to think it's best to use the bluetooth for music rather than physically connected to the Parrot via the Parrot cable, so the power cable will go to the Brodit mount instead.
I'll put the Parrot cable back in the glove box for other devices.

Yep, you should disconnect the negative terminal at least, I forgot to do this & now have an airbag service warning, I think part of the air bag wiring loom goes through it.
So i's a trip to the dealer for me once I get finished up, & have that reset.

For a task such as this (12v socket split/branch) it is not necessary so long as you are careful and don't unplug the connectors to the aircon / temp control (big green plugs) unit as this also (for a reason I don't know) includes the airbag system.

Nope I've not disconnected the battery to do any of my little electrical modifications. If you did how would to test the wiring? I needed to find both a permanent live and a ignition switched live. Like said above just don't play with any of the vehicle plugs.
