Default V70 2001 gearbox issue

Hello everybody!

Im new to this forum but im here to maybe get any ideas of what is wrong with my 2001 v70 aw55 transmission.
The problem is that when the car is cold it works perfectly but whenever indrive for like 5 to 10 minutes my 1st gear starts to act up. When ever i come to a stop it just wont start moving again. Seems like the first hear isn’t fully engaged. When i selext the “L” mode it engages i think the 2nd and everything works fine again after that.
I have also noticed that after some time the first gear seems to engage when i have D selexted. Especially when the car is going slightly downhill or still has some momentum in it.
Might this be a problem of the clutch ?

I can drive my car at the moment but i dont want to hurt it like that.
Any help is appreciated!

Regards,
Johannes

Have you checked to make sure the fluid level is correct when the fluid has reached the right temp? Drive for 15min-20min, stop, leave car running and check the fluid level on dipstick while on level ground. It should be at the top of the "HOT" zone.

Hi Pierremcalpine!

I have checked the fluid level without driving it around and it seemed normal. But i will try this method tomorrow after work. Should i also work my shifter thru all the modes? Also when i checked the level the color looked normal and it does not have any burnt or bad smell.

Yes, after the car is warmed-up you should find a level place to park.
Then run the gear lever slowly P to L then back to P stopping at each detent for a full second.

Promptly get out and check the transmission's dipstick.

If I were in your shoes I'd perform a single drain and fill. It'll cost you some time and less that 4 liters of compatible fluid. Look for one which has a 3309 or Toyota Type-IV (T-IV) spec.

The drained fluid will reveal more that a wipe on a rag. The residue from wiping the dipstick always looks better than it is.

So i checked the oil level. It seems that there is too much oil in the tranny. Could this be also a problem?

I alao had diagnostics made on my car with Vida and there were no dtcs for the tranny.

Just did a flush and a refill. Oil was kinda bad i guess. Never gonna trust the dipstick again. Cost me 35eur for 4liters. And it was a hell of ajob to drain. Took me a nice 20 min to crack that bolt open. It was full of dirt (the magnetic ). Cleaned it off and now new fluid is in. Gonna drive with it for soe time and then gonna do another drain and fill. Hope it fixes it.

I’ll try to post a picture tomorrow of that draining bolt.

And oh, it drained about 4,3liters. Since i had a bit too much i poured in all 4.

If you've put 4 litres in, you will have over filled again. 3 to 3 1/2 litres. Is all you will get out through the drain plug. You should have put 3 litres in through the dipstick tube, drove it to warm the fluid up, then checked the level, using the correct procedure.

So i did everything i could. Drained the excess fluid out and checked the levels, all was good. All after driving and making sure that the oil was warm.
But the problem still excists. The car just doesent engage the first gear some times.

Not sure if maube i should drive a little longer and it might start working?
Or should i letsomeone check my trannys clutch and also solenoids?

I was advised by the Hackensack couple (George and Kira) to use Lubegard Red which has improved the changes when hot .
