UK. Not GB
Don’t forget as from tomorrow 28th, you’ve got to show “UK” on back of the car or trailer not “GB” when travelling abroad.

The Geneva Convention, which is higher law, still specifies GB.
If you follow one law, you're automatically breaking the other, and vice versa. So they thought it through then.

It might be the higher law but what matters is enforcement on the ground... and you could be forgiven for expecting an army of zealous French plod waiting on the motorway out of Calais looking for GB stickers, no hi viz vest in the car or bulb kits...

From my look into the matter the change from a GB sticker to a UK one was actually done by us not the EU. The UK government notified the United Nations that its international ID for vehicles from 28 Sep would be UK. It is thought that this change is to show solidarity with Northern Ireland, which of course is not part of Great Britain. And this has all happened despite our Transport Secretary proudly announcing new GB registration plates in January. According to Autoexpress our government made no announcement about the new UK-stickered registration plates -- it was the AA who spotted it in a UN footnote, and the AA is probably upset that it is stuck with 50000 stickers in its stores! My hunch is that the French police will not know anything about this at all, and fine you for NOT having a GB sticker with which they are familiar, even if you have a UK one. UK drivers are much more likely to get an on-the-spot fixed penalty fine for the dozens of minor offences on the move as well as failing to have hi-viz jacket, first aid kid, headlight converters, triangle, spare bulbs or breathalyzer in the car. Bonne chance! |

Bonne chance![/QUOTE] And don’t forget the emissions sticker you must display, if you intend to travel through Paris and Lyon (I think), Available thru French outlets/online only.

From what I read in the news is that you guys don’t have enough fuel to get to France. So why bother about UK or GB on your car. 😉
