Default Oil O-ring nightmare

Is there a secret to installing a new oil filter o ring??

I was trying to replace mine today but cannot for the life of me get the oil filter cap to screw on with the o ring remaining in place in the little groove. As I hand tighten it seems too fat to go inside the filter housing and gets pushed back to the lip that butts up the the housing when tightened.
I tried rubbing a bit of oil on the o ring and around the lip of the filter housing for it to help slide in, but that didn't work. So tried wiping everything clean with tissue to dry it up, but again no joy, seems like Ive got the wrong o ring... or a different oil filter housing to what should be on my model. I read on line that oiling it should help it go in, so even tried dunking the cap and o ring in some oil and trying again, but it just doesn't look like its going to fit to me.

Should it be this hard?? Changing the oil filter on previous cars was always pretty straight forward.

🙄

TIA

I'd be surprised if there was no O ring on the old filter.

Have you checked inside the housing, maybe the old O ring is inside the housing having come off the cap when you removed it, thus causing issues when refitting the cap.

looks like an oring here that shouldnt be.

Is this:

The old oring (in incorrect lcoation)
The new one (in incorrect lcoation)

As above worth checking if the old one is left in the housing!

Hi all,

There's nothing in the housing, and the two o ring locations in my pics are where its starts (correct position in the groove) and where it ends up after trying to fit (incorrect position).

All I can think is this is either the wrong o ring for the filter housing (27mm socket), or the oil I applied has made it swell, or I have accidentally stretched it.

Something isnt right the amount of effort this is taking. I am currently waiting for super glue to dry as I try to glue it in place long enough for it to hold past the edge of the housing. I know the glue will probably perish the rubber faster, but this is war! Lol

I see quite a lot of old oil below the filter housing and so this could've been the result of no o ring in place, because I have looked everywhere for it, and can't remember taking on off either. I borrowed a 27mm socket from my neighbour who was there when I removed and replaced the oil filters, and he doesn't remember me taking an old one off either. Maybe the previous owner had the same nightmare and just gave up, torquing the life out the cap until they sold it to the next poor buggar... me! Lol
