Default Turbo error - how to investigate it right?

Hi
I have volvo XC60 D5, 2012, 215hrs which is powerful and is pleasure to drive. Since i bought it i get occasionally engine management light on which comes back after reseting and faster acceleration. The car does not lack the power but i've never had XC60 before so hard to compare.

Vida basic test shows 2 things:
  1. ECM-P029900 Turbocharger An underboost condition
  2. ECM-P004900 Turbocharger Turbine overspeed

I spoke with 2 garages - one generic garage said its probably genuine turbo charger issue as ''sensors rarely fail" and made me feel like serious repair possible.

The other garage (volvo specialist) suggested getting turbo sensor without any diagnostic first.

I would prefer not to replace too many parts as it could be very expensive but also wonder what process shall i follow?

1 shall i try to diagnose sensor - how many there are ? is it possible to do it myself with some pressure pump etc.
2 shall i find 3rd garage and do diagnostic first but if they get exactly the same results as above does it make sense to replace the sensor first as the cheapest thing to do?

Any comments/ideas/suggestion highly welcomed and hugely appreciated!
Volvo forum is great!

If they are Vida codes you can click on each code then View Information bottom left of the screen for an explanation of the fault and the possible causes and fixes.

If yours is the twin turbo, the actuator back top right of the engine as you stand facing the bay and the associated boost control valve would be a first check.
You can manually test vacuum actuators for movement and holding vacuum with a cheap vacuum tester.

Hi
Different system, however on my V50 there was a split in one of the vacuum pipes and I was getting no or minimal vacuum even before any actuators.

So a vacuum gauge can tell you a lot.
As soon as I fixed my leak the vacuum came up to a steady max. Can't remember, it was either 20 or 22 " of vacuum
Good luck
Iain
