Default Transmission 'clunk' going from R to D

Our 2005 2.5T has some transmission noises that I don't like the sound of.

When changing from R to D it seems to pause for a second, then give a significant clunk and jolt before it's in gear. This seems to only happen when warm. In normal driving - when taking your foot off the accelerator then putting down again eg when going through a roundabout - it occasionally does the same thing. Seems to hesitate then jump into gear.

The garage (local one but apparently volvo specialist) said that the transmission is programmed to go into neutral briefly between gears or when you take your foot off the accelerator and that the only fix is to change that in the software which 'only Volvo can do'. Does this seem plausible? Any other likely causes?

The first thing is to get the fluid changed and reset the adaptation memory. On later cars there is a software update which improves this issue greatly but I think you will have the earlier AW 5-speed gearbox.

There is a feature called neutral control where if you are stationary with either foot on brake or parking brake applied for more than a few seconds - it does drop the box into neutral. It doesn't do it between gears or when the car is moving. This is not your problem, and I would view with caution any other advice from them.

I wonder if your garage is getting confused with powershift boxes in some way?

Possibly - but just another reason to be wary of them as the PowerShift boxes were never fitted to XC90 (or any other P2 car).

I agree. I was just trying to rationalise how they may have crossed their wires - in any event they declined to touch it, which is at least the right failsafe!

Well it's one way to solve gearbox problems...

Hope all's OK, being serious for a second.

Thanks, she's fine. It was an XC90 after all. But any front end hit is enough for the insurer to make a write-off.

I miss it already.
