Default 850 estate door check strap falling off ---- help.

Just had a bit of a shock. Drivers door check strap started clicking last night, no probs me thought, was tightened straight away last time it did it, just do it again. My ace-mechanic father-in-law pulls back the rubber gaiter and informs me it needs welding as the support plate has parted company with the pillar. My first thoughts are;

a) Jesus help me.
b) Is this a common fault (couldn't find it in a forum search) or symptomatic of previous damage?
c) Assuming this is a door-off job to get at it, is it a nightmare reserved for a garage?

Thanks in advance for a speedy reply, as I don't think it will be long before I am exiting via the passenger door.

Cheers
Mark

Yes it's common.

Do a google search, I think there is a method of DIY without welding but I can't remember where I saw it.

Brilliant, thanks for that. Link with pics;

No chance of Volvo coughing up after 9 years/ 90k miles I suppose. Last car I had this trouble with was an R reg Capri, quite a surprising flaw in such a quality car.

Its a very common fault. Luckily the door is easy to remove (thank god for that multiplug electrical connector!). You then need to find someone with a mig welder to weld the bracket back on.

Done in 2 hours, and that wasn't hurrying. Can't imagine the bill if I had taken it to a garage. Thanks to all concerned.
