I prefer to buy privately as you can get a better understanding of how a car has been treated by meeting the owner etc.

I refuse to pay the extra £££ to garage who have simply taken the car in on part-ex/bought from auction and thrown a bucket of water of it and then try to offer you a warranty that wont pay out as whatever goes wrong will be classed as wear-tear and not covered by the warranty.

tbh both those points have pro's and cons. the owner can easily lie (had a lot of experience with this), which massivly happens when buying ST's as a lot of buyers have reporting people saying they had a block mod to the owner then finding it later on ... it has not.

I also find that garage price their cars pretty well, and mostly inline with what private sellers are pricing as well with the included warranties etc (But a car price is just want some people are willing to pay really).

Im not sure what warranty you experienced but mine has been incredible when I got mine, changing everything from turbos / pipes and aircondition systems etc, for 2 years the warranty company changed parts on my car untill I decided to start heavily modding. Personally I think warranty is great but you need to make sure you read the document and stick to its requirements, if you do then its great. If you miss a service then you have obviously missed the boat.

They grey car looks good, and it doesn't seem like a bad price. It might be open to some negotiation, too. I don't think I'd overlook it if the alternative is giving up on getting one!

I'd echo others' sentiments about cracked liners - it doesn't seem to affect stock example, only those with maps (especially maps which might not be...quite what they could be...and that can be hard to assess!).

cheers

James

We're in the market for a new 'family' car soon and it will likely be something like a previously-expensive 2017 car for about £15k - I've seen lots around this value as Private Sales but I'm buggered if I'm handing out 15-large and driving off with a 'sold as seen' note.

I'm prepared to buy £3k cars privately all day long (and have successfully many times) but when you get to over 10 grand you really need to accept using a car dealer with at least a bit of comfort of having some recourse if it all goes Pete Tong....

Owners can tell me what they like, no receipt then it has not happened in my eyes.

Warranties are fine when a car is only a few years old and low mileage. Most cars I buy are around 12 year's old and have around 80k+ miles on the clock. So trying to get a warranty claim is a completely hopeless situation as 99.9% of warranty companies offered by traders do not cover items failing from wear and tear and at high mileage they will contribute wear and tear to all mechanical failures.

In reality this will be the sort of car I will be looking at so the offset for me is buy privately and wisely and save the £££ I have saved against buying from a trader for any repairs that may come my way.

This is perfectly the right thing to do, my cars are always under £6k mark so I take my chances but if I was paying more then i would use a trader for some protection.

The grey one does look nice, no idea why it's still for sale but I would call and have a frank chat with them. Do a £10 HPI and if all is well agree a price over the phone, then go see it. 10 hours round trip is massive, but with very few on the market I would probably consider it if I liked what the dealer said and he sent several more images of specific things. If he couldn't be bothered to do that then I'd forget it.

Also, he might have sold it ages ago! There was a stunner up for sale this time last year and for some reason the trader left it advertised for MONTHS after it sold... it tormented me for ages!

EDIT: looks like it's got active bendy lights too!

It been the most expensive V50 T5 on the market for the last 2 months, quite bit more expensive than similar ones that have sold in that time.

You can tell how long its been advertised for as the outside temp on the dash display indicates 26 degrees, it has not been this warm since early summer

Good point about the temperature...!

Might be ripe for some negotiation. My Dad got a good deal on his from a car supermarket (back in 2012, when it was only just out of warranty), simply because they were struggling to sell it. Obviously we had the unpleasant experience of dealing with a car supermarket, but that aside...! I got the feeling that they were making very little money on it in the end.

cheers

James

Yes, that length of time makes it ripe for some haggling! Worth a call and a chat i'd have thought.
