Default Auto Hold Parking Brake

I normally have the Auto Hold Parking Brake switched on permanently. When the Auto Hold Brake is released - by gently depressing the accelerator pedal - a pronounced and very noticeable (and annoying!) 'creaking' sound is produced before the vehicle starts to move.

Is this normal, does this happen to any other XC40 owners?

Thanks, in advance, for your comments.

Brakes can creak if the pads are not fully released as the car starts to move slowly. It may be that the automatic parking brake release mechanism is a bit sluggish and needs a bit of maintenance?

The parking break pressure is a function of how hard you press on the brake pedal before releasing when the vehicle has come to a rest, try experimenting with more or less brake force pressure and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks gnomeface and another60 for your comments. Can I assume from these that you do not have a problem with this 'creaking' sound when the parking break is released?

Isn't the creaking sound simply the noise of the motors releasing the rear brake calipers? Try releasing the brakes using the EPB switch before touching the accelerator pedal.

I don’t know what the difference is between the parking brake fitted to the XC40 and that fitted to the V90, but I have noticed that the release is quite harsh on the XC whereas the V90 releases very quietly and smoothly.
I find the jerk and creak when the XC brake releases quite annoying but my wife, who drives the car every day, is used to it and it does not bother her.
When I am driving her car, I often release the brake manually to avoid the fuss.

My new XC40 (11/03/2020) demonstrates the creaking noise from the front brakes as described by others. Ymc30’s description as being like the Incredible Hulk holding me back then suddenly letting go is exactly the sensation I’m encountering.

Had it not been for the closure of my dealership because of the lockdown, I would have had the car back to be looked at already.

Mine is exactly the same, really groans and sudden movement especially when parked overnight. I have given up on the auto brake until I can get it sorted by the workshop, once they re-open.

I also have a MY17 XC90 and the auto brake on that is totally smooth.

Default Auto-hold gotcha

We've had our XC40 D4 R-Design since mid-March. On the whole, very happy with it.

Yes, the auto-hold does sometimes make a slight graunching noise, but nothing that would worry me.

Maybe thread drift, but....With start/stop and auto-hold activated, sitting in a queue at B&Q last week. Engine had stopped. It suddenly started, as it does with s/s from time to time. The car immediately rolled forward a couple of feet as I'd left it in Drive (maybe I shouldn't have done, but I thought that was the idea?); fortunately the auto-hold stopped it before the car ahead got a surprise - or would the City Safety have braked if necessary? I was never keen on start/stop, so now I just don't use it if I'm using auto-brake. Just something else to have to think about!
