Default New member seeking advise on buying an S60, S80.

Hi , i have just signed up to the VOC forum and this is my first post. I have been looking through the forum for the past couple of weeks as i am looking to purchase an 05, 06 S60 or S80. I am viewing two cars this week. The S60 is an 2006 SE D 185 E4 model with full service history and 129k on the clock. The seller is asking £2299. The S80 is a 2005 D5 SE LUX model with 125k on the clock and a price of £1995. The only thing that is putting me a little bit off the S80, is the cream leather seats and light brown carpet. I would be greatfull for any advise on both models.

Best regards.

If the s80 has the euro 3 engine (black engine cover) i'd go for that, better fuel economy and less emmision gubbins.

I've got a S80 D5 SE Lux. Very comfortable car and I like mine.

It's based on the P2 platform, which has some known weak areas (front suspension, etc), but nothing super scary.

Aside from the normal sensible checks on a used car of this age like making sure the cambelt has been changed, and regular servicing, the biggest worry would be the automatic gearbox. Ask whether this has had the fluid changed and when.

I haven't driven a S60 so can't comment.

Try turning in both cars. Not to find a fault but old S60's had enormous turning circles and you may find that a pain. No fun in car parks for starters.

The little expereince I have had with both is that the S80 is more luxurious, as it should be for the original price differential.

And don't be put off by cream leather either, my s60 has cream leather, just needs cleaning a bit more often, done mine twice in the seven months i have had it, mind you that was just the drivers seat.

I wouldn't avoid light coloured leather interiors!

My first light interior Volvo I bought, I bought it despite the interior it had. Now I find I prefer the lighter colours as you feel much less hemmed in doing long runs up and down the motorways. Obviously driving at night it makes little difference, but I like them!

I have a 2005/05 S60 D5 SE Geartronic which I'll probably sell in the next few weeks now I have an XC90 of the same spec (also both black with 'oak' interiors!) It's the facelift car but with the favourable 163bhp engine and 160ish on the clock. Would be looking for around the £1750 mark if any use!

Oh, and as I'm also from Norn Iron I wouldn't have a problem at all with dropping it off in Stranraer to go on the boat!

Thank you to you all for the advise. The S80 was sold before i had a chance to get a look at it. I had a look and good test drive in the S60 and i was really impressed with it. It is now sitting in my driveway and i am delighted with it. It has a couple of small faults but nothing major. I washed the car on Saturday and notice afterwards that when i switched on the windscreen wipers, the screen wash came on and stayed on until i switched the wipers of. The screen wash will work as normal when the stalk is pulled towards the steering wheel and stops when released but when the wipers are switched on the screen washer stays on. I bought the s60 Haynes manual in Halfords and it helps with id the relays and fuses and diagrams.

Regards.
