Govts have to raise taxes somehow. Take it off fuel, add 3p to income tax or raise VAT by 4%. No taxes are popular but they are a necessity.
Some taxes may be necessity, but government spending is way more than the country can afford or needs.

I'd love to be able to legislate myself a pay rise that I know my boss cant afford, but has to pay up anyway.

The phrase 'cut your cloth to suit your means' just never appears in government thinking. Particularly those on the left, who never tire of spending other peoples money.
And I presume you know which government funded services will be cut to address this shortfall in revenue?

Everytime any government tries to balance the books, reduce wastage and target spending to the right places there are hordes of people complaining that they are being deprived.

The community charge was one of the fairest taxes ever that would have funded local governments correctly, that didn't happen because of people who would have had to pay their fair share, the attempts to address housing issues have always ended failing.

Might be worth watching BBC2 at 20:00 tonight to see how your taxes are spent

If you put red diesel in your boat you need to pay road duty if it is used for driving for pleasure. You need to fill out a form and declared how much of it is for heating and how much is used for driving for pleasure.
You do not need to pay road duty for commercial use such as a fishing boat or tourist day trips.

The difference in price is huge so the temptation is great.

James- I assume there are filling stops for narrow boats on the canals somewhere. Usually at a dock or end/start point. Is that right?
Not James replying but yes red diesel is freely available all over the canal network at marinas and boatyards. Under current regulations rebated ie cheap diesel can only be used for non- propulsion purposes. Fuel used to propel the boat has duty on it. (48p per litre?) Both incur VAT. The split is based on self declaration! In the summer at one yard I paid 59p per litre rebated and 107p non rebated

Of course I don't, I just subscribe to the general principle that you shouldn't spend more than you earn. And you certainly shouldn't demand money with menaces (in this case a law created by yourself).
I do agree however with the poll tax, by far the fairest tax ever dreamed up. The whole principle of 'flat' taxation is something I would welcome, as after all, your supermarket bill, electricity, water, etc etc is the same irrespective of your income. We all get in theory the same benefits for living in this country, so why should we pay different amounts?
That's usually a blue touchpaper statement! I'll get me coat.
