XC90-Engine Oil-0W-30 or 5W-30
Hi!
Could you please confirm or comment on below. Recently I have given my XC90-2010 for service @ local garage, instead putting 0w-30 they used 5w-30 is this ok? Or do I need ask them to change the oil and use only 0w-30. When I asked service technician he said it’s a low ash 5w-30 is ok for U.K. weather condition. XC90-2010-auto-diesel-70kmiles. Thank you. |

Thank you for your comments. When I have raised this with technician he said Volvo dealer also put's the same oil(5W-30) the reason he mentioned is UK weather this is the suggested oil. Only Sweden, Denmark and Finland will use 0W-30. Does there any impact on my car engine with this oil? Is it good to ask them replace oil with 0w-30. Thank you. |

I assure you beyond any reasonable doubt they are talking crap about what they say, total junk. The likly truth is that they are buying income containers of 5w30 for sod all (specs are years old) and trying to fob it off on you. Get them to change it and if it gives you loads of grief then leave for 2k then change it yourself in 20 minutes |

0w-30 offers much better low temperature and start up performance and puts less stress on components. I doubt Volvo dealers stock 5w30 unless someone brings in an older xc90 with the 163 engine. They should change it for you but if not use it as a flushing oil, keep it in for 2500 miles then dump it. It also won’t be suitable for a 18,000 mile service interval. |

I confirm, use only 0-30W A5/B5 , i choose Volvo 1161711.
I think you can soot up the DPF otherwise. |

Hi Clan,
Thank you for response. They put 5.8 litres @ 7.5£ per Ltr. And also they charged 15.50£ per bulb (2 xenon front indicator bulbs) 2.50£ for rear indicator bulbs. It’s not main dealer, it is a local garage but mechanic is Volvo main dealer trained. |

Whether 5w will harm your engine or not depends on many things. It probably wont, but, ya cant be sure. Your oil fill must've been C spec, much better for your dpf and shouldnt cause any bother regards wear, again, no-one can definitively say but it -should- be fully backwards compatible with A/B specs.
As others have said above it should be 0w30 A5/B5. 0w30 C2 or C3 would be acceptable with the view of maintaining dpf, avoiding as many regens, and reducing oil dilution from diesel during a regen. As volvo removed any 5w being permitted for euro 4 and later engines, theres a possibility it might cause high oil pressure, overload the pump, etc. |
