Default Early P2 no passenger airbag

I was rather surprised to find my car doesn't have a passenger airbag. I noticed that the dashboard doesn't have the SRS imprint. Opened the glovebox and put my hand up there to find a big empty space.

I had assumed it would be standard on all P2 models.

Yes airbag light comes on while the system does it's check and goes off again. In addition to the drivers airbag it has airbags at the top of the B pillars which are marked 'IC inflatable curtain' and it also has 'SIPS bag' marked on the plastic trim of the front seat bases. The fact that it has these but not a passenger airbag in the dash just struck me as a bit odd.

Cheers
George

I may be wrong about this. My car still has it's original windscreen, or at least a genuine Volvo one. In the lower corners there are SRS symbols. Perhaps the airbag unit is there and is not as large as you might expect. I don't want to keep rooting around up there in case I disturb any wiring etc.

Is it possible the later cars had the dashboard embossed due to a change in the law? If a car had an aftermarket windscreen fitted presumably the symbols would not be on it.

The airbag it quite high in the dash, from what I remember you need to disconnect the gas ram on the glovebox to let it fall down enough to see it. Had to change a faulty (ok missing!) one on my first P2 volvo. Pain in the bum to change, need to take the dash out completely.

Is there a key switch on the passenger side of the dash (where the fuse box would be on the driver's side)? And depending on the interior mirror, a "Pass airbag off" warning lamp in that next to the seatbelt warning?

It doesn't have the bypass switch. I believe that was an optional extra on these cars. I'll have a look at the mirror tonight. It certainly has the seatbelt warning lamp but I haven't had a close look at it.
