I have a new-found respect for OEM exhaust systems: the one on our S60 and the one on our Renault are both original, over 11 years old, are in fantastic condition and are still visibly shiny for the most part.

Looking at mine made me think the exhaust is made out of stainless steel whilst the hangers are mild steel as my back box was held up with house hold wire. Bit of spare pipe later:

and how it sounds:

Need to replace more with tube

Had to replace one, once, on an 04 Rover 75 (if that counts) it was still original at 90,000 miles. Only problem was Rover initially made it a one piece exhaust, it's replacement came in 3 sections...

The exhaust on my XC70 looks to be original and is still going strong at 203,000 miles. Only problem was the centre hanger rotted which was replaced with a new clamp-on version.

Shame the hangers are steel, they rust..

However, easy fix from ebay for about £10.
