V70 2005 2521cc Petrol using oil
My car has always used oil ever since i bought it 15 years ago
It has slowly got more and more now its down to 1 liter every 700 miles or so. 70k miles ago it was 1 liter every 4k miles something is obviously slowly wearing in the engine. Helpfull suggestions of what that might be please would be welcome. Cheers Bruce |

A likely cause may be the valve stem seals wearing, Bruce.
My V70, 2000(V) 136k is the same. It is particularly noticeable when coming back onto the gas after an extended period on the overrun, after descending a long hill, for example, or of idling in traffic. A cloud of blue smoke coming from the exhaust at such times is a good indication that this may be the problem. It is also one that most people decide to live with, at least until it gets really bad. But if you're constantly laying a smoke trail, it might be time for action! Regards, John.

Stem seals can show from a cold start a puff of blue smoke, my SAAB with the GM V6 did that. Using a litre in less than 1,000 miles would usually indicate something more serious.
I had a FIAT Coupë 20v turbo used around a litre of oil every 750-1,000 miles at less than 50,000 miles, no black soot stuck to the rear bumper, no dirty exhaust, it was pistons and rings. A compression test will tell you if things are not as they should be in the cylinders. My FIAT also started to blow blue smoke after light/no throttle when going back on the throttle at around 90,000 miles, that was a worn turbo.
