also +1 for FM transmitter. As pre-FL cars cant have Aux/USB at all, and my CD changer works on 1% of CDs and only if it feels like it, got myself a 15e FM transmitter and never looked back. Its a compromise, true, but I prefer to map the car than spend $$$ on GROM or similar unit.

Sorry people! Just had notification of a reply.
I have a 1.6d s40 s. early 2006 I think! When I start up the car there’s just a picture, no writing etc. Does this mean I am able to remove the CD player, leaving the screen in place and put in an after market head unit? I getting fed up of listening to the same cd’s over and over again! Or is there a better way to install a usb/Bluetooth without using the over priced grom units? |

There are apparently some mid-range options like wired FM transmitter or some module adding AUX IN instead of CD player (only works on basic stereo versions) but thats pretrty much it. Forget about getting a 60e Kenwood 1DIN stereo from your local store... Its not 99' Corsa anymore

I’m tempted to manufacture a cable/adapter like I did with my other car. |

You need to read more about this - basic stereo is easier to alter than high end one, if I remember correctly. Less fiber-optic connections I think.

Not sure the basic system is any more simple other than it has no amp in the boot. Have a look here:
https://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/S4...Electrical.pdf Pages 10 and 27 detail the components all linked by fibre optic MOST. Basic (Performance) audio will have at least and ICM, MPM & AFM. The main difference between Performance and High Performance is the addition of an external amplfier (AUD), the MPM is normally 6 disc instead of 1 and the rear doors have tweeters in them. The best upgrade (in my opinion) ou can make to the performance system is to fit OEM tweeters to the rear doors to make the audio system 8 speaker. We did that on our V50.
