you get to the fan motor by taking out the glove box then all you have to do is undo the 3 or 4 bolts holding the fan in place and pull it out make sure you carefully move the wiring in front of it out of the way first.

very easy job. ;)

I found a large lump of foam-like material in the fan drum bit of the assembly after I'd experienced a similar noise a while back. Can't for the life of me think where that had come from!

You can get to the fan motor once the glovebox is out of the way and all the wiring in front of the motor case has been moved aside. But, unlike poster k6990bbp, I found extracting the motor (and re-inserting it) an utter nightmare to be honest. I just couldn't make enough space.

As an aside, I had another type of noise develop in the fan motor recently, a sort of constant high-pitched hammering. Fortunately it went away when I released some of the pressure on the top screw holding the motor in place.

Simon,

If you'd like me to come along then it's no problem. Loughborough ain't *that* far. Besides, I can set the SatNav to "avoid motorways" and follow country roads most of the way }( .

Where exactly is the rattle coming from? I need to replace my glovebox anyway because it appears to have been greatly neglected by the police so if I can get one before I visit I can have a practice on my car first.

Dismantling bits will increase the chances of finding the rattle so removing the dash top, glove box and underpanel is probably a good place to start.

Do you have a passenger side airbag? If so, I wonder if it could be the bag unit that's worked loose? It's situated directly under the dash top just above the glovebox.

Anyway, travelling down to you is no bother for me. If Monday 14th is good for you then I'll probably come down then - saves any aggro from my wife as she'll be in work anyway.

As for the broken shroud - a washer may sort that out.

If I visit, while I'm there it would be useful for me if you could have a spin in my car and see what you think. It doesn't feel as tight as it should - by tight I mean I get some feedback through the steering wheel as though there's too much play somewhere in the streering or suspension - possibly bushes. Having someone else drive her would be good because they can then determine whether or not they get the same. Also, you could let me know how the boost and general engine pull feels - my turbo's the original and it's on 150k so will be worn. I'm not sure if it's boosting properly so a second opinion there would be good too.

If you don't get any other offers then let me know and I'll keep that day free. If the Monday isn't convenient let me know which day is best for you and I'll keep that day free instead.

Regards

Andy

Yes it might be the airbag unit, it certainly sounds large and heavy and the fan off/on makes no difference.

Getting the glovebox out is a bugger because of the plastic straps that retain the lid - you can't extract them like the Haynes manual says without breaking them, so I dismantled the inside of the lid to push them out which was another bugger.

I'm going to find out how much the plastic thingys are and if necessary cut the old ones free.

If nothing gets in the way of your arrival, I'll set the 14th aside for the job.

I don't have the passenger airbag. The photo might help you plan where to pack it out. The instrument cluster is a Swedish design masterpiece. You'll see what I mean when its off.

He-hey! There's Nigel. I wonder how he's getting on? I e-mailed him the other day to say hi but he hasn't responded.

It might be time to search the archives and find the forum address where he's posting details of his Skyline project. I wouldn't mind knowing where he's up to with that.

Simon,

My wife's just pointed out that the 14th is Valentines day! It's no problem, I can still make it over but I'll have to leave around 3pm to get home - she was planning to palm my daughter off on her parents' and cook me dinner (a rare occurrance and something I'm a little scared about - ever had food poisoning?) so I'd have to be home fairly handy.

I'm going to take the 15th off too so if you're around on the 15th it may be better just in case it takes longer than expected. If not then 14th's no problem - I can be there as early as you like and we should be fininshed by 3.

Regards

Andy

Let's go for the 15th, then we won't have to rush things or risk upsetting your wife...
