steering deflection limiter new shape v70
I own a 2001 V70 with 15" alloy wheels and 195/65 tyres. I have bought a set of 7+16" Metis alloys with 215/55 tyres. On full lock you can just hear one of the tyres rubbing. I bought today from Volvo part no 8666 253 a delection limiter which it states must be fitted to car with tyres 205 or wider fitted. Has anyone any experience of fitting this.
Many thanks for your help. Jim C |

RE: steering deflection limiter new shape v70
Jim,
these limiting rings fit on the ends of the steering rack inside the end gaiters. It looks like you have to remove the inner track rod ends to get the ring over the end of the rack. If this is so then special tools are needed to hold the rack whilst you do it so it's probably a dealer job. If the rings are split then they may open enough to fit over the rack without removing the ends. In any case it's a matter of removing the outer gaiters to get to the inside of the rack and cleanliness is obviously essential. Regards

A a 50 or 45 profile would have been better on a 16" wheel

RE: steering deflection limiter new shape v70
Thw standard size of tyre on a 16" alloy on a new shape V70 is 215/55 or 205/55. That is the size I need for the correct gearing.
Thanks Jim C |

RE: steering deflection limiter new shape v70
Jim C,
Was interested to read this as I also have the 15" alloy wheels and 195/65 tyres and have thought about upgrading to 16". Unless I am mistaken the 16" wheels generally appear to have a larger outer diameter. Does this mean some sort of adjustment / reprograming is needed to avoid speedo and odometer giving incorrect readings? Melvyn |

No, if you select the right wheel and tyre combination you can come to a very close match to the original wheels as mentioned above.
The problem is arch rubbing on full lock - people with the lowered R suspension also get rubbing on the REAR wheels if they fit tyres with wider profile, even as small an increase as going from 205 to 215 widths. Lock restrictors will help this or at the most extreme you can remove the arch liners, though you'll need to do a lot more under-car washing if you take this course. Another way to remove the rub problem is spacers on the hubs - I've fitted these briefly to allow a set of Comets to clear after-market calipers while my own wheels were being refurbed and the effect of thin spacers is minimal to zero on handling and lock. Kalmar Union do properly configured Volvo spacers and the longer wheel bolts that are another essential component - remember the location spigot before you get some other brand; most other spacers will not accomodate this. |

Hers a useful link to the Toyo tyre site with a cross reference chart for all tyre sizes, rolling diameters etc. May clarify things for some!?

RE: steering deflection limiter new shape v70
Sorry, I should have said that the main reason for my wishing to upgrade from 15" to 16" is to increase the rolling diameter. The 15" wheels don't seem to fill the wheel arch properly. I am not too worried about altering the width, particularly given that the turning circle is already on the large size. So I guess my question is - do I need to make any alterations? Is there really a transmission gearing difference or is it just a case of altering something relating to the instrumentation? Any advice most welcome.

RE: steering deflection limiter new shape v70
Normally when the wheel size is changed for styling/roadholding improvement the suitable tyre will have the same rolling diameter, within 2-3%, and there will be little or no difference to the gearing or speedo reading. Fitting even 17" wheels, you wont really fill the wheel arch any more because the "correct" tyres will be have lower sidewalls and be about the same circumference/ diameter, but be wider. Do you actually want to increase your gearing which will upset the speeedo?
