Default 2003 S60 D5 steering tie rod clamp.

Hello people, I have a little problem with play in my steering tie rods so I need to replace them along with track rod ends.Have purchased all the new parts and a Haynes manual, this is where I'm stuck. In the manual it says you need to use a volvo special tool to hold the rack whilst undoing the tie rods which kinda makes sense. Thing is don't fancy buying a tool which I will only use once, any one on this great forum know the dimensions for making one or any other way to do the job.
Any help would be gratefully received
Chris..

Been a while but I recall two flats on the end of the rack which would allow a slim open end spanner to slip in behind the track rod end to act as a counter hold as you open the end. The 'special tool' is probably just that normal spanners will be too thick - happily I had one in the box. Can't remember the size off hand. Mine was easily done with the rack in place.

Rather than me starting a new thread with a similar query, I'm wondering how you got on with this?
I'm wanting to do mine......

I used a set of water pump pliers (search for them on the screwfix website) and apart from being really awkward, it went without a hitch.

Cheers Martin.
Can you remember how the gaiter undos at the rack end? I've worked out the spring loaded clip at the track rod end....end.
Does the inner gaiter unscrew?

I bought a 32mm combination spanner and ground down one side of the flat end until it was thin enough for the job.
Not a particularly cheap spanner as I recall, but I considered it an additional, "slightly" modified general tool for my tool kit rather than buy a special (and no doubt expensive), one off use, tool.

I finally got around to doing mine today.
I decide to use one of those long funnel type removal tools and it was as easy as taking off a wheel nut.
Halfords wanted £320, I did it with OE spec rods for £44.
I've done a YouTube video too for anyone daunted (as I was) by what turns out to be a very easy job.
It just needs editing and will be available this weekend.
