So I then decided to removed the drivers door panel and take out every electrical connection, plugging one in at a time and trying to see if the cluster would come back on. It didn't until I reinserted them ALL back in. Namely the two connection to the power window unit........now everything works, dash/dim/cluster/indicators/power windows all work. Dim/cluster has stayed on since I reseated those power window connections.

SK my advice is, RESEAT ALL CONNECTIONS. EVERY AND ALL THAT YOU CAN.
Glad to hear you solved the problem, a couple of questions .
Did you know of the snag with the window power unit prior to getting the dim fixed?
And do you believe the snag with the Window PU was the reason why the DIM was knackered AND IT wasnt a problem with the DIM?

If you get my drift.

My DIM is with Lucas atm.
