Winter tyres

I'm currently on holiday in Lapland and I'm amazed that nobody is using snow chains everyone is just on snow tyres and not once have I seen anyone lose grip even in icy areas.

I was planning on running winter tyres on my 940 as I've got a lovely set of refurbished Aurigas heading my way which will have summer tyres on.

Just thought I'd share what I've seen as I'm finding it rather fascinating watching cars driving around in thick snow and ice with no issues (I suspect the drivers have a lot to do with this too).

Volvos aren't everywhere here from what I've seen (which was another surprise) but while on a coach we were overtaken by a red 940 saloon which made me a happy man haha.

Been using Goodyear Ultra Grip 9's on my 1996 940 LPT auto for the last 4 years and they are simply brilliant. Great grip. Can set off on a hill and give confidence not going to have an accident.

Only issue if seriously icy and a big hill really need studded snow tyres to grip into the ice. I made it up the hill but very slippery. Was out after the Beast from the east testing them!

We need some nice pictures of the scenery and hopefully the Northern Lights!

Someone i know in Sweden made the point that with it being colder, the atmosphere is less humid. That means less condensation so less water to drop out of the air onto the ground and freeze as ice. Perhaps that's part of the reason?

If you are amazed by winter tires you should try spike tires!
I once took a taxi from the airport in Tromso and coming at the first roundabout I was convinced we would crash. The driver approached it with such speed as if there was no snow or ice! To my relief he could just brake like being on dry tarmac. Later I hired a rental car and was truly amazed by the phenominal grip of spike tires.

I have been using winter tyres for the past few years. Rare to get snow here but even so still worth it

Likewise. I’ve been using Michelin Alpin winter tyres for a few years. When I first started I swapped to summer tyres in April and put them back on in November. However, as I’ve currently got four 900 series cars I’ve been just leaving them on one all year round.

It got light about 10-10:30 and was dark again around 2:30, I say light the first photo was as light as it got.

The coldest it got to was -12 on the first day but the rest of the time it was around -5., they said last week it was -33!
