I think I need to clarify a few things here...
As 740 t5 hasnt responded again either my comment "perhaps it was a sarcastic "how much?" ???"" was either correct or he is in agreement with me that they are a little pricey. this comment was not meant in an unpleasant way, it was meant as a bit of fun... I think you know that! Ian, your comment "I remember people advertising far more common Galaxies for £500 on Ebay, after taking the tyres off," is obviously aimed at me, but you have your facts wrong as the only set I put on ebay was at £350 BIN or BE and I took £300 for them in the end. Tread carefully, remember what happened last time you initiated a forum attack on me? I don't think you are wildly out on price Yoda, IMHO I would say £400 is top whack for those especially as there are only 4. I still put a value of not less that £300 on a set of galaxies as they are IMHO a nicer wheel. Obviously you are entitled to ask whatever you like for them... and I wish you the best of luck. |

I don't want to sound like a negative nancy, but to be honest £500 does sound a bit rich for a set of 4, in need of refurbishment. The most recent set on ebay were £95 each or £380 for the set, in similar condition, and I saw a set go for £350 about 9 months ago.
Best of luck with the sale, still. They're very rare wheels for sure, rarer than galaxies! About the only harder to find wheel is the Polaris.

question
Can someone explane to my misses why a scabby old set of "gary glitter kitch" (her words), alloy wheels are worth more than £50
I persuaded her that having summer and winter wheels is logical, but when i suggested buying the Yoda alloys, having a pro refurbishment, fitting some continental sport rubber and putting around £1200 on the never never card she just walked away muttering "next it will be flares , platforms and Abba tapes" I need to have her told.......... |

It comes down to rarity really. Most other makes/models either have a big variety of aftermarket wheels available or are interchangeable with other brands. RWD Volvos use an almost unique bolt pattern/offset combination and aftermarket wheels are very rare in the UK. So demand drives price, and the three rare/expensive wheels are Galaxie (7-spoke, 16x7, least rare of the three, command about £300-350 a set), Gemini (As seen here, rarer than galaxies, 5-spoke, 16x7, usually command £350-400 a set) and Polaris (17x7, rarest of all, not on the market often enough for a good valuation but I doubt they'd hang around too long at £500).
At the end of the day I bought a nice set of aftermarket wheels from the US, easier and cheaper even after customs fees.

Trust me... Gemini is more rare than the Polaris in ours and surrounding countries!!! Een the Galaxy is more rare than them Polaris. The majority ofthe volvo scene is focussed on these Polaris wheels here in NLD.
I bought my set of gemini's last year here in Netherlands from a crashed 740. It was for quite while on our Dutch Ebay "Marktplaats" without anyone esponding. when I saw them I made the call and arranged for pick personal pick up the next day. It was the first time I saw them in real life! Still I never saw another set than the set I have in my stores. The set of Galaxies I saw here in Holland on one 940 quite some moons ago. Becouse of the inspiration on this forum I started looking out for them and found a decent priced set in Danmark. In my small village there is a guy driving around with a new set of original Polaris wheels on his 245Turbo. I once was able to buy a nice 760TIC with Polaris wheels which I left in the scrappy for aprox. 600 GBP (comlete car!!!). If I only knew than what I know now! But obviously people like the bigger size 17" of these Polaris wheels. Someone passed bij a nice 79, dark brown 242 with nice Polaris fitted and offered 1000 EUR whilst leaving his Virgos... Quote:

I dunno, since I started looking out for this kind of stuff when I bought my first 240, I've seen probably 15ish sets of Galaxies for sale, 4 or 5 sets of Geminis, and 2 sets of Polaris (and one was some poor sod who didn't know what he had and offered them up at £150!). I did see a nice 740TIC with Geminis on ebay about a year ago and offered him £300 and a set of Virgos with new tyres for them, but he told me somebody had already bought them for the same sum that very morning!
Multi-X are damn rare in this country, I can only recall seeing 3 sets for sale ever, but because they're 15" they don't have the same price premium as the bigger wheels.

They look like Ferrari alloys!
I think they're the best 16" OEM wheel purely because of the rarity. I've only seen one other set for sale in the UK (with a 960). |

Thanks for all the comments chaps, I do like a debate/discussion on wheels as I am a bit of wheel whore
Opinion is divided as to their value and there are quite a few that think £500 is a reasonable price for the set so I might as well ask that. They were difficult to price in all honesty and I did base the price on rarity/desirability. Not only this, but I wouldn't really like to sell for much less as they would then be worth keeping for myself - I know i'd regret it in a few years time when they are even rarer! |
