3-Cylinder Engine for XC60!

Just noticed this interesting post on the new line up of engines for Volvos.

could be interesting in a few years.....marry those to some decent batteries, could be quick off the line and super efficient.....perhaps with the 'leccy powering the rear whilst the 3-cyl powers the front.....one way to offer limited AWD.

If you are disappointed by the gulf between claimed and actual mpg in the 4-pots, be prepared to be extremely upset if they move to 3 cylinders! I understand the weight saving aspirations etc, but there comes a point when shifting a heavy lump like a volvo just isn't practical with less capacity, since you spend so much time spinning turbos that the fuel economy disappears.

Maybe they will be wonderful but I remain to be convinced....unless mated to a great hybrid setup.

One thing that will be missing is that satisfying growl of the 5 pot, the sound from the 3 pot will be a whimper!!!

For me, I would hope it would be as quiet as the new D4. I am one of the boring ones who wants quiet along with comfort.

All they need is a three cylinder, two stroke variant and the clock will have been turned back fifty years to a Volvo variant of the Wartburg Knight

Oh yes, you remember them well - I seem to remember them on the forecourt of a garage at St. Lawrence, Ramsgate....not exactly arriving as/at the invisible though....the white clouds are more like a wet diesel perhaps мы приходим менее невидимым might have been more appropriate for a Wartburg driver

Now there's something about a three pot that turns me right off........not sure why but guess as technology moves on then this becomes feasible.....only sounds a bit naff doesn't it?
