Think thumb measuring device will suffice, at least you can't misplace it, well, assuming you don't get it trapped in running belts

Just noticed PAS belt getting really out of shape the other day when I was first looking at exhaust leak, flapping around like a mad thing.

Also had squeal for first 5 seconds after starting, should be picking 3 new belts up with all my exhaust leak parts , so will do asap, tensioners look to be partially seized, so more copious applications of penetrating oil over the next week.

Cheers
Steve
I used to work with two people who lost their thumbs, one was cleaning the pulleys on a Bentley turbo thing from about 2001. They don't have a cambelt so you can run the engine with no belts and as the main pulley spins he was holding sandpaper on it and slipped, he lost his thumb and half a finger.

Another guy somehow got his thumb inside a spring compressor and took the end of his thumb off when the spring popped in to position.

A quarter twist on the longest straight of any belt is a good indicator

I have to be similarly careful with my current Gandalf beard. Fortunately having done "shop" class in school uniform means it's second nature to tuck it in my collar. Metalwork teacher took great pleasure in showing up pictures of de-gloved fingers and torn scalps.

PSA: it's also handy to tuck your beard away when fettling derailleurs, if only because it's a pain getting beard hair out of jockey wheels.
