There are 101 reasons why some people prefer to buy new and probably just as many reasons why others buy second-hand. Everyone to their own...
When I was a young blood at the height of my earning power, I drove a succession of brand new BMWs, Mercs and thought nothing of changing every 2-3 years to stay within warranty.
In those days, I didn't consider depreciation much at all. I allocated a monthly budget for the car (which tended to increase gradually for each new car), and that was it.
It all sounds very cavalier now, but my main concern was to make sure that I always had a deposit big enough to set up the next finance agreement. The longer I held on to the car, the lower it's value became which meant less deposit at trade in. Well, it worked for me!
The point I am trying to make is that not everyone who buys new cars has the same financial aims. It's your right to scoff - theirs to shrug...let's just be grateful that SOMEONE is financially-stupid enough to put new cars into circulation!!

If it lasts five years then the ownership cost is £100 per month if it lasts ten years it's £50 per month plus servicing. Not bad value to own a car that you know and can rely on with all the bells and whistles used as a runabout. You won't get far on public transport for those sort of sums.
don't forget to factor in fuel costs, insurance, VED if applicable for a true cost comparison. but yes still likely to be very good value
