you can check the spark plugs youself,if they are black then its running too rich,also check the exhaust pipe to see if its black on the inside too.

The exhaust is black,and there's regularly a smell of fuel,not checked where from yet. If it's running rich is it a garage job?

had a similar thing at MOT time as the car sat warming up i noticed wisps of grey smoke and because the car was running inside a garage I could smell rich mixture ( wouldn't say fuel though) I knew it was going to struggle with emissions test .

although if I'm not mistaken emissions test doesn't apply to pre cat cars and early cat upto 93 please correct me if I'm wrong .

but as g916 asked is there any adjustments can be made to the fueling these fuel injected motors ?

Emission tests by meter are done on vehicles post 75 with the limits as shown below

92 onward are shown below;

Have you checked it's not leaking fuel as I had the rubber hose go on mine between the tank and main pump

Do you have an O2 (Lambda) sensor on your exhaust system,
usually on the downpipe.
Do you have a CAT?

When I had a failing O2 sensor I smelt fuel, it ran rich, mileage was awful and the exhaust looked very sooty.
