Default What is this noise?

Any ideas about this guys?

On my petrol turbo, which is a UK spec car, there is a very annyoing sound coming from the rear passanger side footwell, almost under the front passanger seat. The noise is there the minute the ignition is switched on, does not change with either speed or revs and goes away only when the engine is off. It is low frequency and sounds a bit like the door is not shut and the wind is getting in but this is NOT it as the sound is there even when the car is stationary. Is there a pump or something down there?

No Offence George, But where are you located?? Can You Bring It to me and we can sort through your list of problems, Why, I'll even let you sleep in a good Estate, back Seats Down, on your OWN :-) Only Kidding.....

Seriously though, I think the sound that you're hearing is the secondary pump energising as you set the ignition to "on".It's Located on the passenger's Footwell/Underneath. I'm not sure that you've much to worry about, though if it continues and gets louder, with any stuttering or Otherwise I'd Fear that it's on it's way out :-(

Regarding the Light Thingy.... I still think it may be down to a faulty dimmer switch, Sounds like it's not making contact some where and then the "bump" has briefly energised it!

Good Luck.

Sounds good about the noise. However, it is such a low frequency, it is giving me a headache. My list of problems is long, very long but this is only because I refuse to pay much money for cars.

George, a noisy main fuel pump is usually indicative of a failed or failing tank pump. Does the noise occur for all fuel tank levels? If so then the tank pump does not appear to be working and the main pump may well fail soon. However, to look on the bright side, maybe the mounting rubbers for the main pump (and fuel filter) have failed or become badly worn and the pump tray may be touching the bodywork, causing the noise to be amplified.

All the best, Peter.

Bushing sounds plausable. Yes, the noise is completely constant. Nothing seems to make it to change. It does not, however, appear with the ignition on, only with the engine actually running.
