Default 940 se Auto Engine Cutout

Help, I love my car, I love my volvo. However it keeps letting me down. The latest is the engine cut outs out and a warning light comes on the dashboard. According to the owners manual its an emissions fault. The car will restart after a while but the light stays on. I have taken it to my dealer and they guess it could breather problems. My local mechanic seems to think it may be the lift pump in the tank. This he says is rare. The volvo dealer tells me the fault code is 121 and 232. This is the third time it has happened and I am loathe to travel any great distance in case I get stranded for good. I just use it for local trips for now. Can anyone help ?

Code 121 points to the Air Mass Meter, whilst code 232 points to mixture problems. You should check all wiring to do with fuel system and make sure that the inlet tract is thoroughly cleaned. The AMM should be thoroughly checked for continuity and serviceability of the very thin wire stretched across the throat of the AMM. Do not break this wire or it will mean a new or s/h AMM. The only other faults that will produce these symptoms are the fuel relay and the ignition amplifier or hall sensor in the distributor.

All the best, Peter.

Make sure that all the connections to the AMM are thouroughly clean. Clean with Ultrasolv to make sure an oxidised connection isn't confusing the car. Is it worth spraying carb cleaner directly into the AMM after disconnecting?

Stupid question for Peter, what's the difference between 232 and 231? Both point to mixture too lean or too rich.

Here we are mate, straight from the horses mouth, but good question nonetheless.

2-3-1* Fuel trim (lambda control) too lean or too rich at part load }If too lean: air leaks, low fuel pressure, bad sensor }Engine stops when starting from cold; high fuel use.

2-3-2* Fuel trim (lambda control) too lean or too rich at idle }If too rich: high fuel press., leaking injector } various driving problems.

As you can see one refers to part load conditions and the other refers to idle conditions.

All the best, Peter.
