High-ish milage XC60
Hi All,
I'm thinking of joining the Volvo fold by getting an XC60 and have found a D5 loaded with kit and 3.5years old but with 133k miles on it. Would this kind of milage scare people off or would you expect this car do another 100k miles without much trouble. Any other things to consider with this model? I really want a car with adaptive cruise control which seems to have been a rare option so my selection is slightly more limited than I'd hoped. thanks |

If correctly serviced 300,000 miles is no problem.
Just make sure you aren't paying top dollar for it.

History is your friend
133K should have had replacement Cambelt & Tensioners, Also Aux belt (twice maybe) If it's got a full service history I wouldn't be overly worried, years ago got an S60 D5 with 97k on the clock & took it up to 150k without any major issues. As mentioned the price needs to reflect the miles rather than the age. Do you know the previous owners (From the Reg doc) was it a company car that spent all it's time running up & down the motorway ?

It was a lease car to a local company, not sure on the details of how it was used but I'd have to imagine that to clock up that kind of milage it must have been cruising the motorways.
I've been told (by the dealer so taken with a pinch of salt) that because it was owner by a lease company they will have maintained it to within an inch of its life but you are right to say I'd have to check whether that's actually the case. I do find it tricky to work out how much cheaper the extra miles should make a car, I suppose ultimately the market finds its own level. This one has been offered to me at the moment for £13.5k which though a lot less than the same car without the high milage still feels like it might be a little high. |

Think about potential resale value and how much you'd pay for it in say 2 or 3 years time with another 50k on the clock....?
I high mileage car will always be difficult for a dealer to sell, so barter hard and get the price right down.

At 135k the truth is it all depends on how driven but bear in mind parts for these such as gear boxes etc will be a fortune and really you have no comback. If it’s exceptionally clean, belying it’s age, has full history with none skipped or missing, and it’s really cheap (enough to replace the box) then Es go for it. All too often people are asking the going rate for something with too many miles and not enough history. Don’t forget in 15k you are now in a very niche market where most people will have no interest in buying it and those that do will want to pay very little for it! |

I brought a 2013 V60 D4 last year at 123k, mileage had initially put me off, but I went to see the car, previous owner got it from 6 months old, and used it as his company car (family business), so all motorway miles, all Main dealer service history, most extensive I've seen serviced at volvo twice a year, had the timing belt done etc. I test drove it and it really did drive like a car with half the mileage, only sign of the mileage was a worn hole in the drivers side carpet (from where the owner had rested his foot).
I brought the car as it was a bargin and I got a further £500 of the asking price, cost me £26 to get a drivers side carpet and 10 mins to fit, I thnk a lot of people were put off by the mileage but if they'd actually viewed the car it would have been sold before I got there. I've done nearly 10k in it in 12 months and no issues (touchwood) drives as well know as I first got it. These engines can do the miles if they are looked after, as long as the service history is good, I wouldn't let the mileage put you off Last edited by scoobysn7x; Nov 13th, 2018 at 15:05. |

Put the reg and miles into one of the online car buying valuation services and add at most a couple of grand over book price if its really really clean.
I suspect it will be overpriced and yes no one will want it next. at 14p per mile excess on a contact hire or PCP that one is worth over £8k less than one with 20k pa miles to bargain for. |

Firstly as has been said - pay the right price - at that mileage someone else should be paying the majority of the depreciation for you.
What happens next depends on what you do with it - if you are doing 30k+ a year then your ownership might be shorter term (2-3 years?) As a general rule it's often significantly cheaper to own a car from 125k to 175k as the depreciation will be negligible compared to the same gap between 50k and 100k. However you do need to be prepared for a higher level of proactive R&M. I run a 2003 XC90 with 175k on it and it's the most reliable car I have ever had (owned 5 years) but it does get a lot of TLC - I attend to every squeak and knock which occasionally arises and go no longer than 10k between services and inspections. But it's never left me stranded.... You should budget for new suspension wishbones and bushes at some point, maybe new shock absorbers, and you run a notably higher risk of other failures such as alternator pulley, power steering rack/pump, wheel bearings etc. That said the depreciation that you are not funding should pay for all of that twice over and if you are going to try this in a car, the Volvo is probably one of the best to go with.... just don't expect it to be as simple as running a car with half this mileage.

Thanks for all the replies, this seems to be the most helpful and friendly car forum I've frequented. Usually I have to brace myself for morons giving inane replies which are basically veiled boasts about how great they are at buying/looking after/modding cars.
It sounds like it's not a definite no go area to buy an XC60 with high milage which is encouraging, I just need to have a look around to see whether the price seems right to me. |
