The MoT changed in May in relation to assessing smoke emissions from vehicles that are meant to have a DPF, specifically to identify if the DPF has been disabled.

My french mechanic cleans out the dpf with a pressure sprayer. That may solve one of your problems of its possible rather than binning the old one.
The other problem of the sensors is worth a second or even a third opinion from a volvo dealer not just a general garage. Or maybe a volvo specialist.

What engine do you have?

My D2 had DPF pressure pipes fail and it was only £400 to fix and replace.
