Well, it’s hard not to say “we told you so”, what a surprise. The move was supposed to save £3M per year.

There have always been those who avoided paying VE duty. Back in the day it was down to police officers and traffic wardens to identify the offenders but they are much fewer now so relying on ANPR. Good when it works but still need to contact the alleged keeper if vehicle cannot be stopped whilst being used by whoever.
How much have they scored by the lawful people paying twice for the month of change of ownership. Seller has already paid and buyer must pay again for same month.
DVLA sending just one letter to last known registered keeper is not good enough but as with other government departments they are probably understaffed with a ridiculous work load. Their working practices are not good either. Some time ago our son received a visit from a debt collection agency requiring payment of £400+ but no indication of what for. Enquiries indicated that they had received the instruction from the Magistrates’ Clerk. Enquiries with Magistrates’ Clerk indicated that this was as a result of son’s alleged failure to notify change of ownership when he sold his car. (I had supervised him completing the relevant paperwork and had posted it myself so that was wrong.) Since then he had received the V5 etc. for the newer car that he had bought and re-taxed it. Further enquiries indicated that DVLA had allegedly sent several reminders to his address which had not been responded to. None of those letters had been received and as he had taxed his new car at the same address and the V5 had been sent to that address we doubted DVLA’ s version of events. Eventually, didn’t pay the alleged debt, went to court, court dismissed case and nothing to pay. Eventually received condescending letter from DVLA advising that no further action would taken in the matter. No apology.
It was their fault all along.

I feel sorry for all the entrepreneurs who set up manufacturing fake discs. The government wiped out their client base in one fell swoop and disrupted their business model.

I have to admit I used to find the old disc in the window handy for remembering when the car needed taxing and by association when it needed an MOT, I know I can look it up online but that's not the same as thinking 'when's it due?' and just having a quick glance as I get in or out of the car. Since the new system was introduced I know a couple of times we've managed to have an untaxed/unMOTed car in our household.

I don't remember my insurance though, the insurance company sends me two reminders in the last month of the old insurance, funny how a company in a competitive market can be so helpful

When I bought my car last year, the salesman at the Volvo main dealer told me that they had recently taken a C30 in as a part ex that had not been taxed for 3 years, but had managed to clock up 40,000 miles in that time.
If you manage to avoid having an accident, don’t get caught by a speed camera and drive in rural areas where ANPR cameras are rare, the chances of being caught are low.
