Default Oil/Filter change intervals

Just trying to gather what the general opinion is re this. I know in my service book it says a service is due every year or 18,000 miles. I would never leave my oil/filter this long without changing it.
I do 10,000 - 12,000 miles per year and change the oil/ filter myself in between services after 5,000 - 6,000 miles.
I have read all sorts of arguments for and against and I know we have moved forwards from the ‘change your oil every 3,000 miles’
Engines are better as is the quality of the fully synthetic oil these days.

Cheers,

Chunk

Given that it costs less than half a tank of fuel I do mine every 6k, why not?

Yes I agree I just ordered Castrol Edge Titanium 0w-30 A5/B5 Fully Synthetic Oil - 4 Litres x 2 for £66 delivered in Opie oils Black Friday deal which I thought was quite good as it’s normally £80.
This is the oil I have used for 4 years since I have owned he car.

Great stuff,

I have just ordered a service kit myself having read this.

I buy my stuff from Eastbourne Volvo. 6l of Volvo oil, filter and sump plug washer for £78. It’s slightly more but with mine being a 2012 and sub 100k miles I have liked the Volvo invoices.

I bought the car 2 years ago now however it’s probably worth going else where.

volvo started the 18000 mile/ 12 month oil change back in 2005 so well proved now after 15 years and millions of miles covered by their engines like this , the oil is designed with Castrol and Volvos joint oil testing venture for that mileage and having drained 1000's of engines over the years I can confirm that the oil is very fluid when drained , like water and holds all the black soot deposits in suspension leaving the inside of the engine still shiny clean .. you won't find any sludge in the bottom of the sump it is just wasting money changing this expensive hi tech oil more often ...

I agree a waste of your time and money. Six extra oil changes adds op to about £500.

Some years ago Castrol did some oil analysis on a Police car that had covered 24,000 miles without an oil change. They found no deterioration in the oil and no significant build up of particles in the oil.

On my older cars that I service myself I tend to do the oil changes every 10k (but that’s a 163 where the service interval was 12k)

But realistically when was the last time someone posted on this forum that they were scrapping their car because of engine failure or it had simply worn out? Belt failure and diesel runaway excepted - possibly never.

Thanks guys guess it was something that I have always done to help keep the engine oil and thus the insides of the engine in as best condition and to last as long as possible.
Looking at your experiences above maybe I am wasting my money.... might be time for a rethink

I would never describe it as a waste of money... but I don't think the risks associated with running longer oil changes are nearly as great as they were 10-20 years ago.

You might think about putting the money and effort into maintenance that makes the car feel more like new - suspension bushes, springs, shocks, engine mounts... etc.
