I would be worried since draining the excess doesn't change the extent to which the oil is diluted.

I'd like to think that Volvo have considered this, but I've no idea. If I got a message telling me to remove 0.5L then I'd want to drain a couple of litres out and add 1.5L of fresh oil.

However I have the opposite problem and have to keep adding oil... VEA engines are oddly inconsistent!

Not in my case, you could see the oil level on the electronic display after the service and it went up as the mileage went up. They drained some oil about 6k miles ago and it's back on the way up again. Indeed the service desk said it was a result of DPF regens and not overfilling at service.

Before someone says I must have switched off during a DPF regen, well I've never done that knowingly and never ever had the mental cooling fan noise that goes with one.

Car goes back to the lease company in Nov and not being replaced by a Volvo nor a diesel.

If the oil was filled to the high mark at the service, then it would take very little fuel to put the overfilled warning up.
There's nothing you can do about it anyway, apart from taking it to the dealer and if its many thousands of miles after a service, ask them to change the oil. You may well be charged of course, but hopefully only for the oil.

See my post above.
In your case it is certainly not a worry. Its going back and if the dealer buys it off the leasing company they will put a warranty on it for the next customer.

Do we know when the warning comes up?

The dealer drained one quarter litre of oil to change mine from over filled to 3 or 4 notches below full on the electronic gauge. No idea how accurate the gauge is but it's now back up to one notch below full. Hopefully it'll be back to the leasing company before the warning comes back again.

This ‘caution’ popped up on my S90 D4 two days ago. The car is 15 months old and does a very low mileage of around 5000 miles per year, most of it local driving. I got the car from a Volvo main dealer in March ‘19.

My question is: 1) is it safe to continue to use the car in this condition?
2) am I going to have this problem every few months considering the type of driving I do?

I have now read in a previous post that a diesel/automatic is not particularly suited to ‘pottering about’, it’s the first time I’ve heard this and it certainly wasn’t mentioned when I bought (not leased) the car!

No diesel with a DPF is suited to "pottering about" short journeys. It's not a Volvo issue but a DPF issue, they are just not suited for that style of driving. Having said that never had a problem with my previous 320D's DPF with the same driving style.

Strangely mine was showing "Oil Overfilled" on the gauge but no warning last week, then after a few days went back down again to just below max. The dealer advised me there was no need to have it looked at urgently.

I had this warning pop up on my V90, so I "popped" it along to the dealer who said it was just a software glitch. A software glitch that took 3 hours of my time and a 90 mile round trip to sort!
