I had a van reverse into the back of the May 19 XC90 Inscription, three marks on the rear of the car, no marks on the van, the Volvo had a new bumper cover and a new bumper beam (hidden under the cover). This was in Spain, however the insurance claim was not a problem.

If the car had not been very new (2 months or so old) and the van driver admitting causing the accident and several British visitors witnessing the incident, I only suffered being without the car for 17 days plus having to drive a manual car (a challenge after 17 years with autos) and an experience in the V40s. The V40 R Design was quite an experience apart from the gear change. I reminded me of the R Design capabilities.

So the accident repair cost me nothing apart from the inconvenience, but utimately cost me the trade up to the latest vehicle.

There is a 4 inch piece of absorbing hard foam between the bumper cover and massive boron steel beam behind :-) That comes into action for the more serious accidents .

Even a 1970's Volvo would have survived this too . I've seen it dozens of times through the years .. back in 2003 , a 2000 V70 was parked on the main road just down from a bus stop , a bus came in and for some reason didn't stop and hit the V70 and pushed it about 4 car lengths down the road , upon further examination just a T cut and polish required on the bumper cover .

Back in 1974 i was called out to a recovery on the M4 a foreign 145 was on its side on the hard shoulder , it has lost control somehow and hit the centre barrier and ended up on it's side on the hard shoulder .. After getting it back and examining it , just a grazed roof gutter at the top of the windscreen pillar and it continued on it's journey back to France . A couple of many many incidents i have seen like this .

Looks a very similar 'accident' I had last year with another Peugeot (106). This was a £5000 bill!

Very similar damage S5Warrior.
Ours has frontal damage too where we were shunted into the vehicle that slammed he's brakes on in front of us.
Maybe a crash for cash, but the idiot in front did not account for Volvo auto-braking.
Soon as he realised that he his car had not been smashed he sped off.
Unfortunately the guys behind us will end up paying for this.

The 1992 SAAB 9000 did not need a new bumper either from memory and it is patchy they went with a respray, the car was fully inspected by SAAB dealership as it was a company owned car they didn't cut corners, Must be the 4 inches of hard foam that absorbed the impact at the time i thought it was a small miracle there wasn't any serious damage sustained.

AFAIK, it was rear bumper assembly (and everything behind it), entire exhaust system (up to manifold/downpipe) and complete tailgate. I've not seen sight of a detailed invoice, but I do know that parts and labour were approaching 5k.

So you hit the car infront then? I hadn't realised that from your original post. It is that kind of situation that a dashcam is invaluable as proving whether you hit the car in front and then were hit or whether you were pushed into the car in front is almost impossible.....
