Default Just purchased an S40 1.6 XS, Advice welcome

This is my first time with a volvo. I've part-exchanged with my Fiat Bravo. I purchased the Bravo from new (Y reg) and it was a big mistake. Depreciation was diabolical and the finish quality of the Fiat was cheap and nasty. Anyway I wanted a nice, solid family car that's going to last and as far as I'm aware Volvo have a good reputation. I've driven the V70 T5 and it was a pleasure (can't afford one). So I've purchased an S40 1.6 XS, T-registered with 50,000 on the clock, full service history at every 10,000. Will it last (I will look after it) and what should i look out for.

Thanks in anticipation

Hampson.

Welcome to Volvo's !

I am also thinking of getting the same car for my wife, possibly 1.8.

They are solid cars that last for ever, as long as you look after them.

PS. What is the 1.6 like to drive both around town and motorway?

With a Volvo you are starting on a better footing than most other brands. Any car will give you trouble if you abuse it and don't get reular oil changes and servicing.

If you car is tidy now, then as long as you are mindful that keeping a car in A1 condition is not necesarily cheap you will be fine.
You will be still happily driving around in years to come when all the Mondeos and Vectras et-al of the same age will have gone to the breakers in the sky.

Cheers,
Dan.

I have a 1996 S40 2.0CD, had it from new. The only bit of trouble it has given me in 50k miles is a collapsed catalyser at 47K and a worn nearside front wheel bearing at 39K (its only MOT failure so far). It gets its yearly service at the local Volvo garage. I intend to keep it for a while yet as I have done a few mod's to it. I do however clean it very regularly, inside, outside and engine bay so I hopefully can keep on top of any potential problems. As Dan F says it is not cheap to look after a good car - Volvo parts are not known for their inexpensiveness ! but it is best to keep it Volvo.

Regards,

I have the same car, S reg though with similar mileage. the car will last forever if kept clean and in good nick. My nearside front wheel bearing also failed and caused the subsequent MOT failure but aside from that I have never had any other problems other than the usual niggles. Listen for a knocking noise at any speed with the stereo off.

Can't say I have been too impressed with the Harrats dealership they really let the cars down but apart from that I am very happy.
