S40 steering problems

Hi all just purchased 1997(P) S40 2.0 16valve 115000 miles for my mother,at a low price,basically its a sound car but 1 slight problem i can feel a little play in steering wheel if i rock it side to side and small amount of play in wheels 1 more than the other i gather this is a track rod end or balljoint problem which i will replace quite easily.But was wondering if anyone has encountered any steering rack problems if this is the case i will have to remove and replace if neccassery,

At the moment i dont think it is this problem but would like any comments suggestions.
