V70 Boot closing
Hello all.
Topic should be called Boot OPENING to be honest I have a 2000 Volvo V70 The boot has started to bang when reaching the limit of its opening. It usually has this soft open where when it gets to fully open it stops it from banging against the roof, so to speak, just like a gas stop. I don't know how to fix it, or how expensive it will be to have fixed, but if you understand what I am trying to explain I'd appreciate some assistance in what the problem may be. I can always video it should the need arise. Thank you Simon PS The boot will stay up on its own. it doesn't fall down. Last edited by simonfoy; Nov 19th, 2017 at 02:15. |

Could it be that the struts are getting past their best ?
They are hidden behind trim panels at the D pillar and above the rear windows. Not too expensive provided you get proper ones and don't end up having to buy twice. |

If you're replacing the struts, watch out for sharp edges to the plastic trim sections - it's easy to slice your skin!
I think when struts fail, it usually manifests as the boot failing to stay in the open position. Make sure the replacement struts are damped on opening. I bought correct sized struts from GSF (I think?) but they have very little damping on opening, the tailgate flies up and needs to be held on the way up to prevent banging into the stops (which sounds like your issue)

Yes, the problem isn't that the boot isn't staying up, it is. The problem is it bangs when I lift the boot up. It used to have this soft open where the last foot or so was taken over and opened without a bang. Noe when I open the boot I have to keep hold of the boot door otherwise it has no stopper, it just bursts upwards almost kinking the roof at times.
If it is a difficult job I will take it in. How much do you think the cost of a repair would be? Thanks again guys, much appreciated. |

The job is easy enough to do. I've listed some tips in both of those threads.
Main thing is to be careful of the sharp edges on the plastic trim and take care not to crack it on removal (it's ABS so glues back up nicely with polystyene cement if you so). I used a broom to support the tailgate as I replaced the struts but a helper would be of benefit. Struts are reasonably cheap. Probably took me a couple of hours including figuring out how to get the struts to fit by adjusting the roof mounting points to suit.

Which was more painful, walking into the broom or the tailgate hitting your head ?
