I wouldn't recommend adding a shim. The seal will have a groove in it where it meets the reservoir. The reason for flipping the seal is to get rid of the groove, not to create more compression.
Persevere with flipping the seal, it certainly can be done.

I take your point.
If it were a thin seal I`d say a shim is a waste of time. As it`s thicker all that`s needed is a bit more pressure , hence the shim. If that works then happy days. If not , I`ll try `n` flip it and if that fails then a new cap it is. At least I`ll have tried all options. |

Well ,
That was sort of successful. Made the shim from the plastic milk bottle and managed to slip it under the seal with not too much drama. It was certainly enough to stop the misting from the cap. "Thanks Chopper Harris!" Trouble was , I then found that the bottle was bowed and starting to blow from the seam next to the expansion bottle. - that ol` chestnut. So no more messing about. Got an `05 on bottle from the breakers for £15, Two bottles of fluid from Halfords -£20. Fitted and flushed. Job jobbed. Just one question folks. After bleeding the system ( lock to lock) with the car on stands wheels off ground, there was a noise coming onto and off full right lock. Sounded a bit like a rusty gate hinge. The pump is new. Any ideas? On the road can`t hear or feel anything. Cheers. |

That could just be the belt slipping, as full lock ups the pressure and hence the load on the pump.
