Your right I could run into all manner of problems just stripping down the top end, but I plan to do that on both...if all goes well I will invest the £60 in the parts needed. If it all goes wrong in the end I will break both vehicles then scrap what's left. As the payout already covered the cost of both cars, I should still be quids in even if that's the last resort.

Update
Ok well the head is off and as expected there is plenty of damage, most of the locating holes for the tappets are broken off (as already predicted). The second V70 is now stripped down also so that's in good nick, just organising the best parts from each car and ready to start the rebuild, so far £200 in parts needed to complete (more than the £60 I predicted, more gaskets than I accounted for).
Travelling for a week or so and parts on back order from Sweden, with any luck I could have a working Volvo before Xmas |

Well it lives!!
I don't know how many hours I put into this, maybe 15 or so with a lot of faffing about....but its now done and she runs! 2 issues so far: - Managed to trap the coolant sensor plug between the thermostat and the oil pump holder on the block when I installed the head...million in 1 chance but I can't get it out. It looks like loads of hassle to remove so I left it there and soldered in the plug from the other Volvo :-) - I have an oil leak, but to be honest it could have been there before. I think it's from the turbo oil drain pipe which was a nightmare to get on. It came off fine but would not align with the new washer on. Well looks like I messed that up and I have some oil misting over that area of the block and a puddle on the newspaper under the car. Any tricks on getting the oil drain pipe on so that it squares up...when I did it I was really scratching my head as the pipe came off easy, but did not align when I went to put it back on. JD |

Hi, Remove both ends of the oil drain pipe and install the turbo end first and then the one that goes in to the block second once you have the turbo end started.
Well done an good luck. |
