Default LPT Automatic performance

My 1996 940 LPT B230FK automatic with new Michelin tyres never seems to spin the rear tyres even when I boot it. Is it due to a fault or is it an auto changing up quickly and grippy rear tyres? The boot is always full with heavy tools.

If you had an intercooler leak would that affect the performance and how can you tell if holed, ie air hiss? It certainly doesn't seem slow and pulls well with no ill effects.
It will get a service soon, but have no running issues apart from very occasionally cutting out after a restart, about 2-3 times a month.

James

135hp new is not going to be a rocketship rubber destroyer in its old age. Especially with a ****-ton of tools in the back assisting traction...

What Ash said ^^^^^ but don't forget that Volvos, especially RWD Volvos have always put their power down well.

If you go on youtube and look for "volvo 940 drift" then find one where the mods are detailed, i'm fairly sure most will be running about 240+bhp which is the sort of power you'll need to break traction easily.

Meanwhile look on the bright side, you won't be turning £200 of rubber into smoke anytime soon!

Between my Brother and me we have always been able to break traction in my HPT (165bhp) very easily even before I turned the boost up but it is a Manual which does help. It probably does it too easily (but I'm used to it so I can control it easily), I think I could probably do with better rear tyres.

The only time we have never been able to break traction is when we have had the car loaded down that heavy it's been sat in the bump stops (happens semi regularly).

Auto boxes are not great for breaking traction unless you have a lot of power.

Mine (LPT auto) will spin up leaving a T-junction in the wet, with an empty boot.

you have a serious traction aid with all that weight in the back.

same power as the old B23E or B20E NON turbo !! That is why you do not have a TURBO badge on the back , It is just to give the engine a bit more torque to compete with other non turbo 2.3 engines of the Era .

There's also videos of NA autos drifting, so a lot of it has to do with driving. A little bit of handbrake action helps Clutch kick if you have a manual too...

Not that I know of course.

Sorry for the delay in getting back.

You have confirmed in my mind that everything is ok Certainly has a boot full probably 100-150kg.

Many thanks.
