Default Hard Choice V60 D4 or D5 - help!!!

Hi All, Ive been given a great choice of company cars and I finally narrowed it down to V60 as I love the looks and image. One of the most important factoes to me is MPG - volvo claims 70mpg for D5 215bhp in extra urban - is that realistic figure? 95% of my business journeys is motorway cruise between 65-70mpg, what chances I've got to achieve claimed mpg? Is D4 better on fuel?

I would say go from combined figures to be more accurate.

The D5 is one gram higher on CO2 than the D4. (assuming it is a manual)

however there is a much larger difference for auto.

having driven a D5 S60 so pretty much the same i was left unimpressed with the manual box tbh.

Power wise if there is not a huge BIK difference then D5 all the way. (if you could live with the box )

This is pretty simple if you want the ultimate performance over economy go for the D5 , but the D4 is set up for economy and goes extremely well , so you need to drive one to choose best for yourself , I really cant see 70 mpg from any D5 , you are hard pressed to get that from a 1.6 D ..

I have a 2011 V60 D3 manual (which would now be badged as a D4). My driving is 60% urban journeys of under 10 miles, 40% motorway and open-road.

The car has averaged a genuine 46.5mpg in the 20,000 miles I've had it (measured at the pumps, not on the trip computer). Worst tankful ever was about 38mpg, best ever was about 53mpg. The economy is great considering the performance, size and weight of the car.

At a steady 65-70 cruise you'll get late 50s mpg. At 80-85 you get early 50s. No way will you get 70mpg unless you're Morgan Freeman cruising at 56mph.

I can't think of any "quality" car that gives an average of 70 mpg. In fact I can't think of any at all.

I find the V60 D5 effortless to drive' espoecialy with the Polestar upgrade. I've come from a Mercedes C320 cdi and there's little in it.

See my old thread for a similar discussion - in the end I went for a D5, as the cost differential was around £30 per month on a company car lease.

The 120g Co2 D5 lump seems extraordinarily low-emitting compared to even the 4-cylinder (and much lower power) competition. There's a lot of opinion circulating about how the D4 engine is almost as good as the D5 in the real world, but in the end I couldn't ignore the fact is has 50bhp less even if the torque is similar.

I prefer auto, but had to go for a manual as the BIK tax was about another £1k per year greater for an auto!!

Edited to add: try an SE Lux spec, as it will offer more equipment than an R-Design (unless you go for R-Design Lux) and cost you less on lease either way.

the 2 litre 5 cyl D has the same torque and hence power up to 3800 rpm , the D5 just carries on strongly from there where the 2 litre fades away . I cant see your fuel consumption being as you would like though :-)
