Default Air recirculation

V40 1998 Estate. When the air recirculation switch is turned off there is a loud clicking from behind the glove box, I guess it is the the air circulation switching mechanism. The problem is, how to get to it? From the Haynes manual the whole dashboard has to come out, not my prefered option! I saw a previous posting that said to cut a hole in the glovebox and if push comes to shove I will do that. But looking at the dashboard assembly it seems the lower part containing the opening glovebox is only pop riveted to the dash that goes all the way across, is it possible to get this lower part out.
Thanks for any help, from, all misted up

Default recirculation motor access

i have e mailed the procedure for gaining access to the recirculation motor.

you DO not have to purchase a new motor because of this, just turn the gearing cog arround 180 degrees, as only one side is permanently used.

Smile Air recirculation

Dear Paul,
Thank you very much for your detailed reply.
A curious thing happened: we had had the car serviced last November by a Volvo garage and the Service light has been coming on so we took it back to the garage to be reset. My good lady suggested turning the aircon on to see if it stopped the re-circulation mechanism clicking. I thought this would be a waste of time as how was this going to affect a defective gear?, but it worked in that the re-circulation is now in the 'Off' position and no clicking!, whether there was any extra pressure on the flap that closed it so the sensor no longer continually told the motor to keep trying to close the flap?
We are not going to use the re-circ anymore but I guess at some time it needs to be done. Looking at the dash arrangement I was still wondering if the lower part of the dash with the glove locker in could be detached from the main dash to gain easier access to the re-circ mechanism?
By-the-way: the Volvo garaged estimated £400 to £450 to do the re-circ problem and this included a new motor, I tried mentioning that it seemed to be an operating mechanism problem but to no avail.
Next job is the oxygen light keeps coming on but the car still passed its MOT on emissions.
Many thanks again.
Regards,
Keith

Yesterday I said putting the aircon on, 'cured' the problem of the loud clicking when the air circulation switch was switched off (ie air from outside) but when the car was started next day the clicking started again. It seems that using the aircon might cure the problem when actually out in the car so normal air can be used but does not permanently cure the problem by being able to not use the switch and so not have a problem.
I will try taking off the lower part of the dash and if that doesn't work use Paul's solution.
