XC 60 5D AWD late 2009 7000kms on the clock. Checked my oil electronically this morning and found it way over the limit. Also had message saying it needed an oil service. The agents established that there was a software problem and are downloading new software from Sweden. Suggest anyone with a recent 5 cylinder diesel checks the oil. If it is overfilled, vist your service agent.

Just sent the car in yesterday. They confirmed oil was high, and drained a bit. Then they uploaded a new software. The ref # of the TJ is AU22527.3.0 en-GB

According to the journal, the SW sets a DTC in the ECM if the engine has too high oil level and also has modified strategy for regeneration. The DTC will display "Engine System Service Required" when engine running.

The main thing is after this TJ service, if the engine oil goes up again and the car goes in, they are supposed to replace the engine oil.

When I collected my car after the software upgrade, I was told that the oil had been changed. I am going to watch the level like a hawk! It is clearly a problem and I am sure those of us who have been affected have not heard the last of it.

Fellow Volvo owners, FYI...

I've just received a recall letter for my S60, for what appears to be the same problem as discussed here. I don't have the letter in front of me, and I don't think it listed XC60 under the affected cars, but it sure sounds like the same issue.

I have serious concerns about the recall, and have started a thread over in the S80/ S60 / V70 / XC 70 area of the forum,

There may be a recall for this on the XC60. Even if not, there are advisories from Volvo to "take care of it" when cars are in for service etc at your local dealer.

Just checked my oil in my D5. After software upgrades and everything else, the oil level is once again way over maximum on both the electronic and manual dipsticks. The message on the dashboard is that I require an oil service. This is the third time in 8500kms. Starting to loose my patience........

I went into my dealership to have a chat with someone technical, and to my surprise a Gorgeous young lady arrived and went on to tell me that Volvo recognize this problem and went into detail explaining all about the DPF, Because I expexcted to speak to a bloke, I left feeling somewhat sexist

Anyway she gave me this letter

Seems volvo are good at employing lovely lasses.

This is reassuring, thanks bob.

Unhappy Oil level fine until first service!

I've followed the rising oil level threads with interest and have been checking oil levels religiously (MY10 2.4d 175ps geartronic), but with no problems. Oil level did not move an iota during my first year of driving.

Now here is the intersting part - just had my one year service and apparently the car was not part of the oil level recall - thus NO software upgrade was performed by the dealer (or so they claim).

Car came back with oil at 3/4 level as described previously but with mpg showing 10mpg - (I've never had this at less then 30mpg). Also, in first four days, the oil level has risen 2 notches and the car in now telling me I need an 'oil level service'. MPG has still only risen to 22MPG - it usually sits at 33MPG (mainly town driving).

I supspect during servicing, Volvo are forcing a more aggressive DPF regeneration cycle upon the car which hits both fuel economy and clearly does nothing to help the problem!
Suggest you approach with caution when it comes time for the service if your engine is running smoothly.
