Attaching Brantz Trip meter sensor to M41 gearbox with o/d
Hi folks
We've just invested in a Brantz trip meter to enter HRCR rallies. We now need to attach a speed sensor to it. We think the easiest/most reliable place to attach it is to the gearbox. I found this video which discusses attaching a sensor to an M40 gearbox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yTLpdr9C-E It talks about using a "Type 9" gearbox adaptor: https://www.brantz.co.uk/product-pag...to-br4-adaptor Does anyone know if the M41 gearbox fitted to our P1800E manual with overdrive is a Type 9 gearbox? Do we need the adaptor? Thanks, Rob. |

I've now done some more reading. I think I have misunderstood the whole issue!
I believe it is dealing with a Ford Type 9 gearbox fitted to a Volvo (a common modification, as I understand it). I could still do with some reassurance that I have now understood it correctly. Also, if anyone has any other more general advice, it would be gratefully received! Thanks again, Rob. |

Hi
As Grumpy Dad says it is very straightforward. Undo the cable behind the speedometer and lower it towards the floor, pull out the inner cable, cut the outer and shorten it by the correct (half an inch ?) amount, insert the Brantz sensor, secure with jubilee clips to the outer cable and reinsert the inner cable. It can be quite hard to push the inner cable through the Brantz sensor. Cheers Stuart |

Hi both
Thank you for the responses. I was thinking of using the BR4, which I believe goes between the cable and the gearbox, rather than splicing into the cable. https://www.brantz.co.uk/product-pag...box-sensor-br4 All the best, Rob |

I think I have got to the bottom of this.
The Brantz BR4 sensor has a M18x1.5 thread on it. This is the same as the Volvo M41 speedo cable. So, the sensor does fit this gearbox. Or it can be positioned in the cabin, behind the speedo. I need to chat to the co-owner of the car about this as a solution. I'll report back on how it goes when we try to install it. We have a bouncing speedo at the moment, so will need to investigate that at the same time. Thanks again for all the help. Please feel free to comment further if I've missed something. Best regards, Rob. |
